Keto Diet: Is it any good? What is the correct way to go Keto?
The difference between an Electric and a Diesel car is in the fuel. Electricity is a cleaner fuel. Similarly, Ketones are a cleaner fuel over Glucose or sugar. And given the choice, our brain will soak up ketones over glucose every time. Evidence suggests ketosis induced by exogenous ketones may attenuate damage or improve cognitive and motor performance in neurological conditions such as seizure disorders, mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, and neurotrauma.
Depending on your body condition, underlying complications, genetics and determination, one may take anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks to enter into Ketosis. The important thing to understand here is that when the body starts attaining ketosis, it starts using fat as fuel rather than glucose and fat is a much more stable fuel source. Your constant hunger and desire for sugars will eventually start to disappear and your brain will feel more energetic.
Irritability, mood swings and constant snacking will also take a back seat. People who complain about forgetfulness and difficulty recognizing things or recalling faces for example, will see a noticeable improvement.
The problem however, with some people is that they experience something called Keto Fatigue or Keto Flu and that is where many of us give up. The thing to realize is that we must do the Keto diet in a healthy way and remember some key points such as adding the vitamins and minerals which if depleted, may be a reason for concern and give you conditions just mentioned. So, when starting keto, try adding natural B Vitamins (like unfortified nutritional yeast powder or flakes). Take Potassium supplements or take more dark green vegetables, beet root greens and wheatgrass powder. Wheatgrass juice has a number of benefits as it provides Minerals, Phytonutrients, Trace minerals, Carotenoids, Fat soluble Vitamins like A,D,E and K. It also gives you Zeaxanthin which is so beneficial for the
eyes.
The key to success with Keto is to understand that Keto, although it means using fat as fuel, is not a High Fat Diet. It is rather a LOW Carbohydrate and low grain diet. If you stuff your body with a lot of fat, it will be forced to start storing the excess which is not needed for fuel.
And it may create complications. Just remember to completely stop sugar which includes sugar in any form be it honey, brown sugar, agave nectar or even fruit juice. The Liver does not differentiate the source of sugar.
It treats sugar in the same manner no matter where it comes from. Fruit juices, because they lack fiber, are not better than sugar. And besides, remember to eat only seasonal fruit.
Nowadays every fruit seems to be available all year round and its not beneficial for the body's summaries, start Keto intelligently, pay attention to your body and recognize its needs, Replenish with salt and water as well as the essential vitamins and minerals, cut down the carbohydrates to the bare minimum, eat two square meals with the in between snacks and stop eating breakfast. Have a coffee or tea with a little butter or better still, add a spoon of MCT oil which will help provide ketones to your brain and curb hunger during initial stages of transition and most importantly, make it a new lifestyle not something which you will do for a month and stop. It's all about living Healthy, living Longer and improving the quality of your health.
I will explain in more detail the next steps to take Keto to another level. Enjoy better health.
Live a fuller Life.
