What is an Antioxidant and why do we need it ?
Antioxidants are needed by our body to neutralise the free radicals and pathogens which are constantly attacking us.
An endogenous antioxidant is one which is made by our body to neutralise the free radicals and Glutathione is a master endogenous Antioxidant which contains a Sulphur and a Hydrogen atom. Therefore, Sulphur is an important ingredient without which our body cannot make Glutathione.
There are two stages by which the body detoxifies itself. The two major organs involved are the Liver and Kidneys. Glutathione is involved in both the stages where it basically attaches itself to a water soluble toxin and the kidneys then filter it out. The same process is carried out in the Liver. So the requirement of Glutathione is constant as it is eliminated regularly. And our body’s ability to produce Glutathione diminishes with age, diseases, exposure to toxins and other genetic factors. Glutathione reductase thereafter recycles the used up Glutathione after it has donated its Hydrogen atom for the neutralisation process of toxin elimination.
We are constantly more and more deficient in Glutathione due to lack of sulphur in our diet and consumption of alcohol and smoking. Lack of good Gut health is another big factor in the depletion of Glutathione.
Eating more Sulphur rich foods like eggs, onion, garlic, leeks and arugula plus taking care to have a good gut health by eating pre and probiotic foods or taking supplements when we consume antibiotics for example which kills the good bacteria in our gut are some of the steps we can take to ensure that Glutathione is abundantly available and being produced unhindered by our body.
Due to the recent bout with the Coronavirus, more and more of us are getting more conscious of our health by improving our immunity. Eating healthy and regularly detoxifying our body can also help us attain good health and age without disease.
