Cholesterol : How dangerous is it
Let me start by telling you that cholesterol is made by the Liver in our body. The body is incredibly intelligent and will never do anything to harm itself and if it is making cholesterol, then it must be required. In fact most of our brain is cholesterol and our cell membranes are made of cholesterol.
It helps make bile and vitamin D. It also is responsible for making the insulation around our nerves. Yes, it is present in the plaque inside the artery but it is there for some kind of protection. It did not get there to block the artery. So it is not the cause.
But since it is so intimately involved in many body processes the body needs to transport it to the required places and that's where the lipoproteins come in. Reason being cholesterol is a kind of waxy substance which does not mix with water so lipoproteins do the job of binding with them and taking them to the desired place for utilization.
So there are some mechanisms involved in the transportation of the VLDL, LDL, HDL cholesterols and that is where some free radicals are released and some vitamins like Vitamin E are involved in the detoxification process.
The triglycerides are fat molecules which accumulate when you eat and their purpose is to release energy when you are not eating. But if you are continuously eating most of which being carbohydrates, the triglycerides start creeping up. And if the return path of lipoproteins along with raised levels of triglycerides are present, this is where the problem starts to develop. The hardening of arteries (atherosclerosis) happens as the arteries lose their elasticity. Elasticity is lost, they start to raise blood pressure because they lose their ability to expand when the blood is pumped and contract when the blood is returned.
Heart attacks and stroke are common. If you are lucky enough to to get a diagnosis in time, the health care provider will immediately put on statin drugs like Lipitor.
I do not say that Lipitor does not do its job the problem is most of the time it is not required and the side effects are so many that after knowing them (hemorrhagic stroke, arthralgia, diarrhea, and nasopharyngitis, urinary tract infection, insomnia, limb pain, muscle spasm, musculoskeletal pain, myalgia, and nausea)you would like to at the least, limit your intake.
Why do I say it might not be needed ? Because just looking at aT raised total cholesterol, or for that matter even raised LDL is not a marker. There are other tests involved which will report the hardness or fluffiness of LDL because it is when LDL is hard it starts to pose problems. Even the size of particles plays its part.
That being said, and knowing the side effects of medicines i do urge everyone to start following a healthy lifestyle. Try the healthy Keto. Stopping sugar alone can make your body take a complete turnaround.
Eat Healthy, do Intermittent fasting, eliminate processed foods and oils. DO NOT go for low fat varieties of yoghurt or milk and hopefully you will not need medicines all your life.
