What is LDL Cholesterol and why is it considered bad
We must understand here that our body requires a lot of Cholesterol. So much that we manufacture our own Cholesterol. Quite a lot per day. And the body being so intelligent will never do anything to damage its own health. So why does it manufacture so much cholesterol ? It's because Cholesterol is involved in a lot of body functions and is an integral part of our cell membranes. It forms the outer layer of our cells, helps absorb vitamins and minerals, is involved in transport and distribution of energy, regulates thyroid and hormones and our brain is almost 80% Cholesterol. With so many important functions to perform, it is no wonder that our body actually produces Cholesterol to ensure the trillions of cells that form our body are performing in a way that they are supposed to.
The important thing to understand is that there are mainly two types of Cholesterol in our body. The HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) and the LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein). It is the balance of these two along with the triglycerides which is the basis of ascertaining how much of a risk you are of developing heart disease or other problems.
The function of LDL is to transport Cholesterol. It therefore performs a very important function and just seeing a high level of LDL and starting to take Statin drugs to lower it is compounding the problem even further.
LDL is basically of two types the large and fluffy type which floats and the small and dense type and it is this dense type which is the culprit and it is a damaged form of LDL. How it has got damaged has much to do with what we are eating. Constantly eating fried and processed foods, oils which are high in Omega 6 not only serve to disbalance the omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio, it also damages the LDL Cholesterol to form the dense type which is its undesirable form.
And our eating habits which involve mostly carbohydrates and copious amounts of sugar and sugary drinks and juices are largely to blame.
So just taking Statin drugs to lower cholesterol which already performs so many functions and without which we cannot live is like compounding the problem further because it is just treating the symptom. Treat the cause and the problem will go away. Understand that just looking at the numbers is not an indicator of the problem.
It is the ratios and its comparison with the triglycerides is the real indicator of any problem. Raised triglycerides are a sure indicator of an excess sugar in your blood.
Therefore, eat healthy, cut down on carbs, bring down your stress levels and eat the right kind of fats (not the refined oils) like Olive and Avocado Oil, Coconut oil and Grass fed Ghee. Then go for the tests again and you will be surprised with the change in results.
