Are you Potassium Deficient ?
Potassium is a mineral that is required in a large quantity and must be replenished everyday. Almost 4500-5000 mg of potassium is required primarily because it is involved in a very large functions controlling the nerves and muscles.
Potassium is available in dark green vegetables, avocados and whole fruits. Grains have a very miniscule amount and they have phytic acid which actually blocks absorption of minerals. So if you are not having enough vegetables chances are that you are deficient in Potassium like most of the population largely having only processed foods and sugars.
Potassium works together with sodium and if you are consuming too much sodium, unless you take more potassium to balance it, it will deplete your potassium. The reverse is also true: too much potassium with less sodium will also create an imbalance.
Potassium deficiency affects Cognitive ability and Mood Swings. A deficiency will affect your memory and may make you depressed. It is responsible for providing brain support. Potassium will also help you in the gym when you workout because it provides support making your muscles stronger. Therefore, a deficiency will serve to weaken your muscles and you will feel tired very soon. Due.to its property of muscle support, its deficiency will cause leg cramps. Even your bowel movements will be affected by its deficiency. Note that many times too much sodium symptoms may actually be a sign of potassium deficiency.
To get enough of this all important mineral, eat large salads and vegetables. Preferably eat your salad before your meal because after a meal you cannot have enough of the salad as required. Bananas, sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, brussel sprouts, nuts and fish are all good sources. Potatoes also have potassium but their high starch content is undesirable.
Please check with your healthcare provider if you have kidney trouble, diabetes or hypertension as significant changes can sometimes have other harmful effects if not monitored carefully.
