Visceral Fat: The danger and how to get rid of it
Visceral fat is the fat that accumulates in your abdomen and around the waist making the belly protrude out and the appearance of tire- like side lines around the waist. It is especially dangerous fat giving rise to a range of complications and potentially hazardous health conditions including the deposition of fat in arteries and also complications of the heart. Since this condition is mostly due to a continuously raised Insulin which triggers deposition of fat around the liver to start with, there is no other solution other than lowering the Insulin and start burning the fat. However, starving your body of food as happens with crash diets, is not a solution because even if you do happen to lose some weight, it will happen with a lot of suffering caused by constant hunger and the body sensing a lack and lowering its metabolism causing lethargy and loss of energy.
So what then is the real solution to this problem ? The answer is lifestyle change. Everyone of us has an inbuilt switch in our body which is supposed to function by turning on in the presence of Glucose and turning off in the presence of fasting so that we can use the stores of fat which we have accumulated for using during the absence of glucose. It's an on off switch which we are not using. So then the next question arises: how to lower insulin ? Because in the presence of insulin, the body cannot burn fat as insulin is a fat storing hormone and in the modern lifestyle, because of our eating habits we have a continuously raised insulin level. In order to lower insulin and use ketones as fuel, there must be an intermittent fasting schedule where we are fasting for 16 hours and eating two meals in an 8 hour window with no snacking in between. The best way to achieve this is to skip breakfast and have the first meal at 12 -1 pm and the other between 8-9 pm with a gap of at least 2 hours before sleeping at night and the last meal. There may be a need to supplement electrolytes, taking care that sodium levels do not fall as the body gets rid of water in the process. It is best to start intermittent fasting after consulting a healthcare professional who can analyse your body type and any underlying disease and medication to avoid any adverse effect.
