The thyroid then releases T4 (the inactive form) and T3 The active form. Basically most of the conversion of T4 to T3 takes place in the Liver and about 20 % of it takes place in the Kidneys. The hormones released by the thyroid perform some very important functions like regulating metabolism, heart and muscle function and growth hormones and bone maintenance. It works with another gland called the hypothalamus.

For the proper functioning of the thyroid, the most important trace mineral is Selenium and the next being Iodine. Other vitamins like B2, B6 and Zinc also play a role in it's functioning. Vitamin D is also required and if one practices Intermittent fasting and a ketogenic diet, doing away with sugars and carbs, it helps the thyroid in a big way.
