How to keep your skin healthy and glowing as you age

Our skin is the largest external organ in our body and is primarily composed of two layers the outer epidermis and the inner dermis.

There are many ways we can damage our skin and there is also a lot that can be done to keep it healthy and wrinkle free. Let us look at the things that tend to decrease and take away the glow from the skin as we age. Loss of growth hormone is a big factor contributing to loss of elasticity and collagen. As we lose elasticity and collagen, the skin starts to dry and look lifeless. Loss of elasticity results in the appearance of wrinkles.

What we can do to keep the skin healthy is most important.

  1. Collagen needs vitamin C to prevent skin dryness and since our body cannot store vitamin C, we have to constantly replenish it by eating foods that provide it.

  2. To overcome the loss of ability to repair, the skin exposure to UV rays of the sun must be limited. No exposure is also bad so prevent over exposure. 15-20 minutes a day is sufficient depending on the season and which part of the world you live in as sun rays slant away from the equator and of course diminish in the winter season.

  3. Too much insulin will contribute to skin degeneration and so will alcohol. If you notice the skin of people who eat lots of carbohydrates, sugar and drink alcohol or even smoke, the skin looks very old even at a young age.

  4. Try to limit the scrubbing and over cleaning your skin with soaps as it tends to deplete the microbiome on your skin. Using lots of artificial hydrating lotions which claim to be absorbed quickly will not only harm the skin but tax the liver as after absorption, it will have to be eliminated by the liver.

  5. Focus on your diet. It is the most beneficial thing you can do to keep your skin healthy. Flavonoids, Carotenoids Vitamins A,D,E,C, K, Omega 3 fatty acids, Magnesium, Manganese, Selenium and Zinc are all essential for good skin. So is a good, healthy liver and Gallbladder because if you do not have enough bile or had your gallbladder removed,  chances are that you are not absorbing the fat soluble vitamins. Floating stool is an indicator that your body is not absorbing fat well.

  6. Incorporate foods like Olive Oil, Avocados, Large Salads, Blueberries, Leafy and cruciferous vegetables , fatty meats, sea foods and cut down on sugar and Carbohydrates,

  7. Make sure to get enough sleep, exercise and practise periodic prolonged water fasting of 48-72 hours because that is when the body takes care of the cleaning and eliminating the damaged proteins and cells.
