The Different types of Teas and Their Benefits
Different types of teas have different properties and affect the body in different ways. Some cultures like Korean, Japanese and Chinese cultures lay much stress on teas and have very diverse types in their daily routine. The problem with tea arises when it is mixed with sweeteners and some instant teas (even green tea) contain a lot of sugar additives or even sugarless sweeteners which are nevertheless detrimental for health.
Perhaps the most popular one used in India is Black Tea which is made from fermented tea leaves or dust and has a high content of caffeine. It has properties which can protect the brain and lungs. Try to use it without sugar and milk. Or add very small amounts.
The next most commonly used and studied is Green Tea. It is widely believed and documented to have high antioxidant properties. Made from steamed tea leaves it fights many kinds of cancers like stomach, lung and breast cancers.
White Tea is another unfermented and uncured tea which has the most potent anti cancer properties.
Pu-erh tea is made from aged as well as fermented leaves and is good for lowering the LDL (bad) cholesterol.
Other popular teas include Ginger, Ginseng, Jasmine, Chamomile and Hibiscus teas with a variety of health benefits like fighting against coughs and colds and Hibiscus tea is known to bring down high blood pressure.
In my opinion, one must incorporate a variety of teas in their daily routine and keep drinking different teas regularly to get the benefits overall. Just be careful with the amount of added sugar, be it in any form white, brown or jaggery and you can enjoy a healthy drink wih all the benefits associated with it.
