Essential Electrolytes
Electrolytes are essential minerals which perform some very specific and important functions in the body. Even during a fast or prolonged fast, one must be careful to replenish the body with electrolytes to avoid complications of metabolism and other essential functions.
The most important electrolytes include Sodium and Potassium. Sodium is essential for retaining fluid balance and hydrating the body. It is involved in Oxygen transport and it binds with chloride to form salt. Sodium works with Potassium for various functions and their balance is essential meaning if Sodium is less than required, it will affect Potassium and vice versa. The problem is most of us (due to modern eating habits which involve very less vegetables that provide Potassium) are deficient in it causing problems with proper function of nerves and muscles.
Magnesium is another mineral which we get from vegetables and thus we are mostly deficient in it too. Magnesium helps with the absorption of sodium and potassium and transportation of oxygen.Magnesium helps with muscles when exercising. Calcium is another mineral whose deficiency will cause problems with skeletal muscles.
Other trace minerals required in small quantities like Iodine and Selenium are nevertheless performing very specific and important functions and we must take care to get them on a regular basis.
I would like to stress here that the best vitamins and minerals we can get are from natural sources and a balanced diet. It is important to note that supplements which are in synthetic form are not easily absorbed and are largely a waste of money.
