Eggs: The Incredible Benefits

Eggs: The Incredible Benefits | VR Healthy Ageing

Eggs have a lot of health benefits and there is a myth that egg yolks raise Cholesterol which is completely false. However, these days, the quality and the benefits of eggs has to do a lot with how they are produced and what the chicken is fed or it eats. There are a lot of types of eggs available in the market with labels reading Free Range or Cage Free or Farmer Eggs etc. But we have to be careful in what we buy because there are even dyes being fed to the chickens which can determine the colour of the yolk. So when the dye containing feed is given to the chicken, its bland and pale looking yolk will change to an appealing orange or darker colour. Even labelling it as Free Range does not always mean that it has a lot of space to roam and feed. Pasteurised eggs means they have been heated to kill some bacteria and Vegetable Fed may mean they have been fed grains which makes them unhealthy. In other words, unless the chicken is free to roam and eat bugs and worms in a stress free environment, the eggs will not be as healthy as they are supposed to be. The best way if possible is to raise your own or buy from a farmer where you can inspect how the chickens are kept and what they are fed.

If one can get healthy eggs, they can really provide a lot of health benefits as eggs are one of the most complete types of food. The egg white is mostly protein and if eaten without the yolk it will spike insulin as it will be converted to glucose. And the yolk is where all the benefits of eggs lie. Eggs actually raise the good type of HDL cholesterol. In addition to this, they contain Choline and Lecithinwhich are good for the brain and liver and Lecithin breaks down Cholesterol. Eggs also contain the most bio available form of Vitamin A i.e. Retinol and a range of other vitamins like Vitamin K2, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin B1, B2, B6, B12 and other trace minerals. Eggs also contain Omega 3 fatty acids and can benefit the eyes by providing Lutein and Zeaxanthin which protect against blue light and prevent macular degeneration.

Therefore, eating 2-3 healthy eggs daily can be a very good option but be careful not to overcook them as heat can destroy some vitamins and minerals. Keep them as soft and runny as possible and they will provide you with all the benefits for a good and healthy life.
