 The Importance of Magnesium

The Importance of Magnesium | VR Healthy Ageing

Magnesium is a mineral which is crucial for proper body functions. A large part of the world’s population is increasingly getting more and more deficient in this important mineral. As a result, Depression, Muscle Cramps, General feeling of lethargy and weakness (frequent yawning), inability to get proper sleep and in some cases convulsions and even twitching can be seen.

Magnesium can affect Blood Sugars, Electrolyte levels, Bone Density Energy (ATP which is the energy factory of the body and depletion makes one chronically tired) and most importantly the health of our arteries. The walls of our arteries are flexible in nature expanding every time the heart pumps blood and contracting every time the blood is returned to the heart through the veins. Magnesium affects the absorption of Calcium which starts getting deposited in the endothelial layer of the arteries causing hardening and thereby affecting the expansion and contraction thus causing the blood pressure to rise.

Even if we do strive to get enough magnesium, the magnesium absorption is affected by sugar and carbohydrates as well as processed foods consumption. Limiting sugar and Carbs therefore is key. Our soils are increasingly getting depleted of minerals and that is one reason for an acute deficiency of this vitamin in a large part of the population. Supplementing the diet with leafy greens, nuts, seeds, sea foods, meat and berries can serve to provide this much needed mineral.

If one is very deficient and needs to take supplements, I would advise to steer clear of Magnesium Oxide, Mg. Hydroxide, Mg. Carbonate or Mg. Sulphate.

The versions most beneficial are  Magnesium Glycinate, Magnesium Citrate, Magnesium Threonate (very good for memory and brain functions however, it can be expensive), Magnesium Malate and Mg. Taurate.

Do take good care of your health especially in these modern times where a large part of our diet is increasingly becoming unhealthy and laden with toxins. Avoid sugars and added sugars as well as their alternatives. Read labels carefully before purchasing. Maltodextrin for example is often added to processed foods and it is worse than sugar even having a glycemic index of over 130.

Do consult your healthcare provider or doctor before taking any supplements especially if you are already under medication.
